Context
Sprey is a competitive 5v5 multiplayer FPS developed by a new studio on Unreal Engine 5. The project was in early production, requiring strong design direction to avoid over-scoping and ensure playable, testable builds as early as possible. The core challenges consisted in defining a clear gameplay identity in a crowded market, while preventing feature creep and misalignment of design decisions with technical constraints and team capacity. As the Lead game designer, I was responsible for the overall game vision and system design, making final design decisions and trade-offs and coordinating the design team with other production teams.
My work
I defined the core gameplay pillars and removed non-essential mechanics early, prioritized systems that could tested quickly, and designed progression systems with scalability in mind.
With the lead programmer, we assessed feasibility of design ideas and adjusted mechanics based on engine and, above all, networking constraints. We ensured all systems were implementable and testable swiftly.
I coordinated a team of 5 designers, assigning responsibilities and validating work. I also set a design documentation structure with XWiki, and reworked the production workflows with other team leads, ensuring that every project member had all the correct information at every moment.
This allowed give more stability for subsequent work on the project, reduced iteration time, and clarified design priorities for team members.
